LOCAL INFORMATION

Known as the ‘Gateway to England’, Dover in White Cliffs Country, Kent is an active, adventurous and authentic English town.  From fascinating history and heritage to beautiful countryside and fantastic coastal views – there is plenty to discover and explore!

Its iconic White Cliffs rise above the Channel and have served as a symbolic and practical marker for travellers for centuries. Archaeological evidence shows that the area has been a point of arrival and departure since prehistoric times, with Stone Age and Bronze Age finds, including the world‑famous Bronze Age Boat preserved at the Dover Museum demonstrating its ancient maritime connections. The Romans established Dover as Portus Dubris, a fortified port complete with lighthouses and military infrastructure, parts of which still survive today. Over the centuries, Dover continued to grow as an important point of defence and trade, later becoming one of the Cinque Ports and playing significant roles in conflicts ranging from medieval sieges to World War II.

Modern Dover remains a major ferry port and administrative centre, with the Port of Dover contributing significantly to local employment and tourism. Landmarks such as Dover Castle whose origins stretch from medieval fortifications back to a Roman lighthouse draw hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. The town has undergone considerable redevelopment in recent years, including new marina facilities, retail developments, and a revitalised seafront promenade. Visitors can explore attractions such as the Secret Wartime Tunnels inside the cliffs, the Maison Dieu, and the sweeping coastal paths above the White Cliffs. With its blend of rich history, striking natural scenery, and contemporary regeneration, Dover continues to stand as one of England’s most distinctive coastal towns.
