Ian Hugo AFNI is a Principal Consultant at Marico Marine and a Master Mariner whose career includes command at sea with senior marine leadership ashore. A former Harbour Master which includes the Dockyard Port of Plymouth, Aqaba Port and Marine Services, and Harbour Master and General Manager for the Canal & River Trust, he has led harbour operations, VTS and pilotage services and overall marine safety in both statutory and commercial settings.

He has managed marine services in harbours and terminals worldwide. As Regional Managing Director for Smit Lamnalco across Africa, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent, he delivered pilotage, harbour and offshore tug support to demanding customers, and later led a shipyard and fabrication business in Nigeria. Royal Navy command of ships and submarines underpins his approach to risk, compliance and operational discipline.

He is currently Designated Person for a range of UK harbours, from major ports to smaller provincial ports and facilities. His work centres on the Ports and Marine Facilities Safety Code, marine safety management systems and navigation risk assessment.
