Alan McPherson

Chief Harbour Master
Forth Ports

Alan McPherson is Chief Harbour Master for Forth Ports and has spent much of his career working at the interface between ports, marine operators, regulators, and stakeholders. He is responsible for marine safety, navigational safety, pilotage, conservancy, and the practical application of the Ports and Marine Facilities Safety Code across a diverse network of ports and marine facilities.

Passionate about keeping marine operations both safe and efficient, Alan believes that strong relationships and clear responsibilities are fundamental to successful marine safety management. He regularly works with a wide range of stakeholders, including terminal operators, marinas, harbour users, stakeholders, and regulators, to navigate the challenges of an ever-evolving maritime environment.

At the conference, Alan will explore why the Ports and Marine Facilities Safety Code matters to third party marine facilities, what it means in practice, and how harbour authorities and facility operators can work together to deliver safe, compliant, and resilient marine operations for everyone who uses the port.
